Emotions: Receiving the Gift of Limits

Series:EMOTIONS
Duration:46 mins 46 secs

EMOTIONS: RECEIVING THE GIFT OF LIMITS

“IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR A CHRISTIAN TO BE SPIRITUALLY MATURE WHILE REMAINING EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE.”
PETER SCAZZERO

LEARNING TO DISCERN MY LIMITATIONS:

   LOOK AT YOUR PERSONALITY.
LOOK AT YOUR SEASON OF LIFE.
   LOOK AT YOUR LIFE SITUATION.
LOOK AT YOUR EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND INTELLECTUAL CAPACITIES.

THE TREE, GEN.3:1-7

      WHY THE TREE?

“GOD HAS NOT MADE A BAD TREE. HE HAS SIMPLY MADE A TREE. AND THERE IS NOTHING INTRINSIC ABOUT THE TREE THAT IS DIFFERENT IN ANY WAY FROM THE OTHER TREES. RATHER, GOD HAS SIMPLY CONFRONTED MAN WITH A CHOICE. HE COULD HAVE JUST AS WELL SAID, “DON’T CROSS THIS STREAM; DON’T CLIMB THIS MOUNTAIN.” HE IS SAYING,
BELIEVE ME AND STAND IN YOUR PLACE AS A CREATURE, NOT AS ONE WHO IS AUTONOMOUS. BELIEVE ME AND LOVE ME, AS A CREATURE TO HIS CREATOR, AND ALL WILL BE WELL. THIS IS THE PLACE FOR WHICH I HAVE MADE YOU.”
FRANCIS SCHAEFFER

“EMERGING ADULTS ARE DETERMINED TO BE FREE. BUT THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS WORTH DOING WITH THEIR FREEDOM. THEY WORK VERY HARD TO STAND ON THEIR OWN FEET. BUT THEY DO NOT REALLY KNOW WHERE THEY OUGHT TO GO AND WHY, ONCE THEY ARE STANDING. THEY LACK LARGER VISIONS OF WHAT IS TRUE AND REALL AND GOOD … MANY KNOW THAT THERE MUST BE SOMETHING MORE, AND THEY WANT IT. MANY ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THEIR INABILITY TO MAKE TRUTH STATEMENTS AND MORAL CLAIMS WITHOUT KILLING THEM WITH THE DEATH OF A THOUSAND QUALIFICATIONS. BUT THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THAT, GIVEN THE CRISIS OF TRUTH AND VALUES THAT HAS DESTABILIZED THEIR CULTURE. AND SO THEY SIMPLY CARRY ON AS BEST THEY CAN, AS SOVEREIGN, AUTONOMOUS, EMPOWERED INDIVIDUALS WHO LACK A RELIABLE BASIS FOR ANY PARTICULAR CONVICTION OR DIRECTION BY WHICH TO GUIDE THEIR LIVES.”
CHRISTIAN SMITH, SOULS IN TRANSITION

“FOR THE ESSENCE OF SIN IS MAN SUBSTITUTING HIMSELF FOR GOD …”
JOHN STOTT

“EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE HAS A NATURE, WHICH MEANS LIMITS AS WELL AS POTENTIALS, A TRUTH WELL KNOWN BY PEOPLE WHO WORK DAILY WITH THE THINGS OF THE WORLD.
MAKING POTTERY FOR EXAMPLE, INVOLVES MORE THAN TELLING THE CLAY WHAT TO BECOME. THE CLAY PRESSES BACK ON THE POTTER’S HANDS, TELLING HER WHAT IT CAN AND CANNOT DO AND IF SHE FAILS TO LISTEN, THE OUTCOME WILL BE BOTH FRAIL AND UNGAINLY. ENGINEERING INVOLVES MORE THAN TELLING MATERIALS WHAT THEY MUST DO. IF THE ENGINEER DOES NOT HONOR THE NATURE OF THE STEEL OR THE WOOD OR THE STONE, HIS FAILURE WILL GO WELL BEYOND AESTHETICS: THE BRIDGE OR THE BUILDING WILL COLLAPSE AND PUT HUMAN LIFE IN PERIL.
THE HUMAN SELF ALSO HAS A NATURE, LIMITS AS WELL AS POTENTIALS.”
PARKER J PALMER

THE TESTIMONY

JOHN THE BAPTIST REALIZING SELFHOOD; JOHN 1:19-27

I AM NOT THE MESSIAH, 19-20

      I AM NOT ELIJAH, 21a

I AM NOT THE PROPHET 21b

I AM A VOICE (OF THE LORD), 23

      I AM A BAPTIZER (IN WATER), 25-26

I AM UNWORTHY (TO UNTIE HIS SANDALS) 27-28

JOHN THE BAPTIST RECEIVING SELFHOOD, JOHN 3:22-30

      LIMITS, 27

      POTENTIAL, 28

      REALITY, 30

“FOR THE ESSENSE OF SIN IS MAN SUBSTITUTING HIMSELF FOR GOD, WHILE THE ESSENSE OF SALVATION IS GOD SUBSTITUTING HIMSELF FOR MAN. MAN ASSERTS HIMSELF WHERE ONLY GOD DESERVED TO BE; GOD SACRIFICES HIMSELF FOR MAN AND PUTS HIMSELF WHERE ONLY MAN DESERVES TO BE.”
JOHN STOTT
